Why must cable reels be fully unwound during use?

Cable reels must be fully unwound whenever you connect devices drawing more than 1,000 W in total because coiled cable cannot dissipate heat efficiently. When current flows through a wound cable, the core temperature rises rapidly, potentially exceeding 65 °C and triggering the thermal cut-out switch or, in extreme cases, damaging the cable insulation. Unwinding the cable allows heat to radiate into the surrounding air, enabling the reel to safely handle its full rated load — typically 3,000 W to 3,300 W for a 16 A model with 3G2.5 mm² cable. This is a fundamental safety rule in professional event technology and construction site applications, ensuring reliable operation and preventing equipment damage or fire hazards.

What does IP44 protection mean for cable reels?

IP44 protection means the cable reel is safeguarded against solid foreign objects larger than 1 mm in diameter (such as dust and small debris) and against splash water from any direction. The "4" in the first digit indicates protection against objects over 1 mm, while the second "4" denotes splash-water resistance. For event professionals, IP44-rated cable reels are essential for outdoor festivals, open-air concerts, and trade shows where rain, moisture, or accidental liquid spills are likely. The socket outlets are equipped with hinged covers that seal when not in use, preventing water ingress and maintaining safe operation even in challenging weather conditions. Always verify the IP rating matches your intended environment — indoor applications may only require IP20, but outdoor and stage use demands at least IP44.

How do I choose the right cable reel for my event project?

Choosing the right cable reel depends on four key factors: cable length, load capacity, protection class, and build quality. First, measure the distance from your power source to the farthest device — select a 25-metre reel for compact indoor setups or a 50-metre model for large outdoor stages. Second, calculate the total wattage of all connected devices and choose a reel rated at least 20 % above that figure (typically 3,300 W for 16 A models or 6,000 W+ for 400 V three-phase variants). Third, match the IP rating to your environment: IP20 for dry indoor venues, IP44 for outdoor or dusty conditions. Finally, prioritise professional-grade construction — look for H07RN-F or H07BQ-F cables, thermal overload protection, reinforced housings, and compliance with DGUV Information 203-006 for touring and event use.

What is the difference between indoor and outdoor cable reels?

Indoor cable reels typically feature IP20 protection, lighter polycarbonate housings, and shorter cables (often 15–25 metres), making them ideal for workshops, studios, and dry event spaces where splash-water resistance is unnecessary. Outdoor cable reels, by contrast, are built to IP44 standards with sealed socket covers, UV-resistant H07RN-F rubber cables, and reinforced steel or galvanised frames to withstand rain, dust, and mechanical impacts. Outdoor models also use oil- and abrasion-resistant cable jackets (such as H07BQ-F polyurethane) that resist damage from rough surfaces, vehicle traffic, and harsh weather. For professional event applications — especially festivals, open-air concerts, and trade shows — always choose an IP44-rated outdoor cable reel to ensure safe, reliable power distribution regardless of environmental conditions.

How should I properly maintain and store my cable reel?

Proper maintenance extends the lifespan of your cable reel and ensures safe operation. After each use, inspect the cable for cuts, abrasions, or exposed conductors, and check socket outlets and plugs for damage or burn marks. Wind the cable evenly onto the drum using the hand crank, avoiding kinks or tight bends that stress the conductors. Clean the housing and cable sheath with a damp cloth to remove dust, dirt, and residues — never clean while the reel is energised. Store the reel in a dry, temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, moisture, and corrosive substances. Before storage, ensure the cable is completely dry to prevent mould or corrosion. Periodically test the thermal cut-out and overload protection by briefly exceeding the rated load in a controlled setting, verifying that the safety mechanism trips as designed. Following these practices keeps your cable reel tour-ready and compliant with professional safety standards.

What cable types are best for professional event applications?

For professional event and stage use, the two most common cable types are H07RN-F and H07BQ-F. H07RN-F features a black natural-rubber or synthetic-rubber jacket that is highly UV-resistant, flexible in cold temperatures (down to –25 °C), and ideal for outdoor festivals and touring productions. H07BQ-F, typically orange, uses a polyurethane outer sheath that offers superior abrasion resistance, oil and chemical resistance, and high visibility — making it the preferred choice for construction sites, industrial events, and environments where cables are subject to heavy foot or vehicle traffic. Both types are rated for 230 V or 400 V operation and comply with DGUV Information 203-006 for temporary electrical installations. When selecting a cable reel, verify the cable type matches your application: H07RN-F for general outdoor event use, H07BQ-F for high-abrasion or industrial environments.

Can I use a cable reel with DMX lighting systems?

Yes, you can use a cable reel to power DMX-controlled lighting fixtures, but it is essential to distinguish between power distribution and DMX signal transmission. The cable reel supplies mains electricity (230 V or 400 V) to the lighting fixtures themselves, while DMX control signals travel separately via dedicated 3-pin or 5-pin XLR cables. Never attempt to send DMX data through a power cable reel — the two systems are electrically incompatible and mixing them will damage equipment. In professional stage setups, power cable reels and DMX signal cables run parallel but separate routes, often secured to the same truss section using cable ties or Velcro straps. For large-scale productions, consider integrating the cable reel with a truss-mounted DMX splitter or opto-isolator, creating a modular power and control infrastructure that simplifies load-in and ensures reliable communication between the lighting console and fixtures.

What is the cost range for professional-grade cable reels?

Professional-grade cable reels suitable for event technology and touring applications typically range from €80 to €350, depending on cable length, load capacity, construction quality, and brand. A compact 25-metre indoor model with IP20 protection and 3G1.5 mm² cable starts around €80–€120, while a robust 40-metre outdoor reel with IP44-rated outlets, H07RN-F 3G2.5 mm² cable, and a galvanised steel frame costs €150–€220. High-capacity 400 V three-phase cable reels with CEE connectors, 50-metre H07BQ-F cables, and reinforced IronCoat housings can reach €250–€350. Premium brands like Brennenstuhl, Bachmann, and Showtec command higher prices but deliver superior durability, compliance with DGUV standards, and longer service life under intensive touring conditions. At LTT, we offer competitive B2B pricing, volume discounts for event companies, and the assurance of our 3-year warranty — ensuring your investment delivers reliable performance and excellent value over time.
