What is the difference between GY6.35 and G6.35?

The difference between GY6.35 and G6.35 lies in the pin diameter, not the pin spacing. Both bases have their two pins spaced 6.35 mm apart, and both are low-voltage bi-pin capsule bulbs. A G6.35 lamp uses slim pins of roughly 0.95–1.05 mm diameter, whereas a GY6.35 lamp has thicker pins of about 1.2–1.3 mm. This means a GY6.35 lamp may not fit a socket built for G6.35 pins, and a G6.35 lamp can sit loose in a GY6.35 holder. Always check the pin diameter and the fixture holder before choosing between the two.

What is the difference between the G4 and G6.35 base?

The difference between the G4 and G6.35 base is primarily the pin spacing. A G4 base has its two pins spaced 4 mm apart with slim pins around 0.65–0.75 mm in diameter, while a G6.35 base has 6.35 mm spacing and pins of about 0.95–1.05 mm. Because of this the two bases are not interchangeable: a G4 lamp will not fit a G6.35 socket and vice versa. G4 lamps typically cover lower wattages for accent and small spot lighting, whereas G6.35 lamps handle higher wattages in studio, projector and stage fixtures.

Are GY6.35 and G6.35 lamps interchangeable?

GY6.35 and G6.35 lamps are not automatically interchangeable, even though both share a 6.35 mm pin spacing. The decisive factor is the pin diameter: GY6.35 pins measure about 1.2–1.3 mm, while G6.35 pins are slimmer at 0.95–1.05 mm. A thicker GY6.35 lamp may not enter a socket designed for slim G6.35 pins, and a slim G6.35 lamp can sit loosely in a GY6.35 holder, causing contact problems. Before swapping, always check the pin diameter, the fixture holder, the operating voltage and the current type.

What does the G in the base designation mean?

The letter G in a base designation such as G6.35 or GY6.35 originally stands for glass, the historic base material used in these capsule bulbs. The number that follows, 6.35, gives the distance between the two metal pins in millimetres. An additional letter such as Y further specifies the pin type and diameter, which is how GY6.35 differs from a plain G6.35. In short, G identifies the pin-base family, the number defines the pin spacing, and any extra letter narrows down the exact pin geometry.

Which LED replacement fits a G6.35 or GY6.35 socket?

An LED retrofit fits a G6.35 or GY6.35 socket only when several factors line up. First, match the base and pin diameter exactly to your holder, since G6.35 and GY6.35 pins differ in thickness. Second, confirm the voltage, usually 12V but sometimes 24V, and make sure your transformer suits the LED. Third, verify AC/DC compatibility and dimmer compatibility to avoid flicker. Finally, check the physical dimensions so the LED fits the installation space. When base, voltage, current type, dimming and size all match, a GY6.35 or G6.35 LED offers far better efficiency and lifespan than halogen.

What does a G6.35 halogen lamp cost?

A G6.35 or GY6.35 halogen lamp is an affordable consumable, with individual capsule bulbs typically ranging from around one to a few euros depending on brand, wattage and whether it is a premium series such as the Osram Halostar Starlite. Multi-packs lower the price per lamp, which is useful when you need spares for a whole rig. At LTT you buy genuine brand lamps at fair prices, with free shipping from €69, a 3-year warranty and fast dispatch from Germany, so budgeting spare lamps for a production stays straightforward.

Which G6.35 lamp suits professional stage and studio lighting?

For professional stage and studio lighting, a G6.35 or GY6.35 halogen lamp with high colour rendering and warm-white output between 2700K and 3100K is the strongest choice. Studio and film work benefits from a high colour rendering index for accurate skin tones and true colours, while stage effect fixtures and follow spots need the compact, high-output source these capsule bulbs provide. Match the wattage, for example 35W, 50W or higher, to the fixture and choose a dimmable model if your control desk requires it. Premium series such as the Osram Halostar range are popular for their stable performance.

Why are G6.35 halogen lamps no longer produced and what are the alternatives?

Conventional G6.35 and GY6.35 halogen lamps are no longer produced since September 2023 due to efficiency regulations, so only residual stock remains available. This makes it sensible to stock spare halogen lamps for existing fixtures while supply lasts. The main forward-looking alternative is a GY6.35 or G6.35 LED retrofit, which is far more efficient and longer-lasting. Before switching to LED, check the base and pin diameter, the voltage, AC/DC compatibility, dimmer compatibility and the physical dimensions so the LED fits and operates reliably in your fixture.
